Planning Graduate Student Receives Centennial Award

Tania M. Metz-Estrella, who will be graduating with a Master’s in Planning with a concentration in Environmental Planning from the College of Social and Behavioral Science, has received a Centennial Award from the UA Graduate College and the Division of Campus Life.

The Centennial Award recognizes outstanding achievement and contributions of minority graduate students at the University of Arizona.

Originally from Carolina, Puerto Rico, Tania completed a bachelor degree in Environmental Science at the University of Puerto Rico and graduated with honors. While pursuing her undergraduate studies, she worked at the University of Puerto Rico doing data analysis with Geographic Information System (GIS) technology focusing on the karst formations on the Island. After graduation, she moved to the United States and started working at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park in California. During her tenure she created maps and analyzed sequoia tree data with GIS.

While at The University of Arizona, Tania has worked with Professor Laura Huntoon from the Planning Degree Program, which is a graduate program in the Department of Geography and Regional Development, researching urban changes along the US-Mexico border. Tania recently worked as an intern with the Sonoran Institute making recommendations for open space at the UA Science and Technological Park.

Tania is currently finishing a master's program report that focuses on urban encroachment next to protected public lands. Eventually her research will be used by the Sonoran Institute to create workshops to educate managers of federally protected public lands.

Upon completion of the master's program, Tania would like to continue working with organizations that look to guarantee a healthy urban growth in conformity with our natural resources.
